France is renewing its nuclear capability with the M51 missile. When fitted with its new multiple warheads it will “Be able to strike 'rogue states,' even preventively." As with the US and Britain there is a move away from a “weapon of last resort” to more ‘useable’ tactical weapons.
French nuclear weapons have not seen much opposition in recent years but these developments have spawned a growing number of protests.
One of the protests was held at the French missile testing ground just south of Bordeaux last September.
A group from Britain were part of the international element.
As a major protest took place outside the base over 30 managed to get into the testing ground.
Despite helicopters, watch towers and patrols we spent several hours in the base. When we gave ourselves up we were taken to the Centre of the base (giving us a good tour of the site). We were release after 4 hours without charge.
